The Given Line
Refer someone for the Given Line
The Given Line is ninety days of the Line, at no charge, for someone in hospice who couldn’t otherwise have it. A phone number and an extension of their own. They call when something comes to mind, nobody answers, and their family keeps the recordings.
Each one is funded by five Lines that people bought for their own families. We open them in the order people joined the waitlist, as those Lines are sold.
Before you fill this in
Five things to know first
Sending this does not mean a number is waiting
There may be none available on the day you send it, and we can’t tell you when there will be. We would rather say that here than have you promise one to somebody.
They should know about it, and want it
The form asks whether the person you are referring knows about this and wants it. It does not ask you to judge their health or how well they are managing. If they don’t know yet, please talk to them first.
Their agreement is theirs to give
Consent to being recorded is taken on their own first call, in their own voice, and without you there. Nobody can agree for them, including whoever fills in this form. If they are under eighteen, a parent or guardian consents first.
We talk to you and the hospice, not to them
We contact you and the hospice contact you name, and never the person you refer, until they know about this and want it.
The ninety days start when they first speak
Not when the number is set up. A call where nothing is said does not start them.
The referral
Who are you referring?
Anyone may refer someone, family included, but every referral names their hospice. We confirm each one with the hospice contact you give us before a number is opened.
Please tell us nothing medical — no diagnosis, no prognosis, nothing about their care. We don’t need it, and a hospice generally can’t share it with us without the family’s permission.
We don’t pay for Given Line referrals. Not to a hospice, not to a care home, not to anyone. A recommendation from your team stays a recommendation.
